This last weekend was the celebration of La Reconquista de Vigo! One of the biggest parties of the year, the Reconquista commemorates the uprising by the people of Vigo on March 28, 1809, against the French. In addition to reenactments, traditional food and drink stalls, as well as live music, the festival was really about spending time with friends and family — oh, and hating the French!
The reenactment on the second day of Reconquista was a grand affair! Everyone stormed into the old part of the city wearing period clothing to rise up against and expel Napoleonic troops. While other activities of Reconquista were light-hearted, the reenactment was a more serious affair. It was inspiring to see how passionate and proud residents of Vigo are of their city and of their history. During the weekend, my friends and I had the chance to sample some traditional Galician meals, drink a lot of cheap sangria, and spend the day enjoying it all together.
Although the festivities ended Sunday evening, my night became even better. After a frantic scramble to stream the Oregon Women’s Basketball game, I was able to watch my favorite team advance into the Final Four! While life here in Spain is pretty great, I wish I could have been there for that big win. However, it was the perfect end to a perfect weekend!
