Inflight meal from TAP Air: (Left) Beef strips with rice and cooked red peppers, macaroni salad with baby shrimp, cesar salad, buttered roll, peach cake, and a cup of rosé wine. (Right) Turkey and cheese sandwich with Nature Valley bar.
Since my travels to Latin America during the summer of 2016, I have been extremely impressed by the nature of latino airlines making their customers feel like family. While the professional values of flight attendants are something that can be found on many airlines, it is another value that makes the difference...the food.
While flying United from PDX to Newark it was business as normal. During the five hour overnight flight, passengers received two drink services along with a packet of salted "Pretzel twists". I'm not saying that I hadn't grateful for this...but COME ON.
Now is the part of describing to you just how much my standards of in-flight food have skyrocketed. During my seven hour overnight flight from Newark to Lisbon on TAP Air, passengers received four drink services including free alcoholic beverages, one full meal, dessert, and one smaller meal before landing. Even on my short hour-and-a-half flight from Lisbon to Vigo we all received a drink service with a small meal and dessert.
Even though my time spent here in Vigo has been short, this experience in conjunction with my time in South America further reflects how deep latino values run. Food is a manner of connection and comfort that drives latinos to make other feel at home and welcomed. From now on, to me even in-flight food can reflect the values of a culture...it's all in the details.
