Bucket list item…√

My first week in Spain has had its difficulties, but last night proved to be a blast! My only regret is I should have taken more pictures. However, attending my first ever partido de fútbol was such a fun experience! Jennie and I met up with a couple of other auxiliares at the Estadio Abanca Balaidos to watch our home team, RC Celta, play Getafe CF. Both teams are in the Liga Norte Primera Division. On our way, along with hundreds of fans in white and blue home jerseys we made the pilgrimage to the stadium.

We ended up sitting in the GOL section—because it was the most economical option as english teachers who would not be paid until the end of the month—but I hope to find better seats as the season progresses. Shortly before the half, Celta scored the first goal of the game! I was enchanted by how the stadium erupted with chants and songs!

Many times throughout the game my attention turned to the crowd where I would watch little kids yell “cabrones” or “ladrones” at the opposing team and referees and listen to the surround sounds of seeds being cracked and popped into mouths. Not so different than the US after all!

Unfortunately, shortly before extra time was added Getafe scored a goal, tying up the game. While there were a few close calls on both sides, the game ended up in a tie leaving everyone to head home without the feeling of satisfaction or dismay. Personally, while I had such a great time watching the game and becoming a fan, I feel as though I will always need a decided winner or loser.

Even though this was my first game, I am positive that I will be attending many more in my future! I can’t wait to learn the chants and make my way back to the stadium in blue in white very soon. From now on, ¡vamos Celta!
