Well, here it is -- my final lesson plan at the Escola Oficial de Idiomas. While of course I was very sad to leave such an awesome school and great students, I didn't want to leave on a low note. That being said, I decided for my final lesson to teach something very important in the life of an average American -- slang.
As a language learner myself, I find slang to be a huge barrier in understanding the daily comings and goings of real life. Slang is ever changing, can't be found in your average dictionary, and varies between generations making it the final frontier for anyone wanting to master a language. So, in order to give my students some insight and tools to better understand American slang -- much of which they see on social media and any Hollywood flick -- I made a day of it!
Playing top American music hits in the background, my classes set about matching current slang terms to their definitions while using all of their tools as necessary -- that including Urban Dictionary! My students and I all had a great time laughing about the silliness of the terms, sharing the Spanish equivalents, and learning more and more from each other. It was a perfect way to close out my time at EOI and to say my fun, yet final, goodbyes to my students. I can only hope that my GOAT students are now woke enough to flex on any basic native English speaker with their dope skills!
