A Canadian Friendsgiving

This evening our fellow neighbor to the north, Ashley, threw all of us Americans a Canadian Friendsgiving. Even though I'm in Spain, tonight I learned something about Canada. To begin, I didn’t even know that Canada celebrated Thanksgiving as well! Because their harvests in the north occur earlier in the year, Canadians celebrate their Thanksgiving much earlier than we do in the US.
I brought the champaign, and our newly formed friend group celebrated in style. While many ingredients that are common on Thanksgiving plates are few and far between here in Spain, Ashley told me that she had packed the essentials—including two boxes of stuffing and assorted seasons—with her on her flight from Toronto. For dinner we ate turkey, candied yams and carrots, homemade butter biscuits, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and fresh salad. For dessert there were brownies, a cinnamon-apple bunt cake baked by Julia, and we topped it off with a traditional Spanish late-night cup of espresso.
On this Canadian Thanksgiving, I have to say that I am beyond grateful to have met and been accepted wholeheartedly into this incredible group. We all seem to have so much in common and enjoy each others lively company. Now that Lindsey, Jennie, and I have our own apartment, I wouldn’t be surprised if this upcoming American Friendsgiving will take place under our own roof. For now, I will keep my eyes peeled for any kind of pumpkin pie makings…wish me luck!
